UPDATE

Hello All,

I went by St. John's today. The cross windows on the front doors have been permanently covered over so we won't be peaking inside any longer. There were also people working on the handicap ramp roof. I didn't see any other exterior changes.

The neighborhood is starting to figure out what is happening. Several people in obvious Muslim clothing were seen around the property yesterday. A representative from the neighborhood community council contacted Kathy Lantry's (the area's local city council person) office and wanted to know why they hadn't been informed of the sale. She was told because this is considered a "same use" situation, the property would not have to be re-zoned so the city has no obligation to notify the community council or the neighbors in the vicinity. This has happened before when other non-residential property changed hands. It usually ruffles some feathers but the city is within its rights not to say anything. As the saying goes, you can't fight City Hall.

I haven't heard any negative reaction to the sale yet but there is bound to be some. People complain about every change around here. There are even people griping about a Mississippi Market food co-op moving into the neighborhood and that is about a good a change as you can have.

I suspect that it is being intentionally hush-hush about the Islamic center. I think there might be a lot more people than we think who might not be happy about this sort of thing, either taking place in a Catholic Church - or- in their neighborhood. Either way - not good... I'm just sick about all the veiled and untold truths.....what parish church is the next to succumb to the brutalities of our time?

"Prayer is to our soul what rain is to the soil.

Fertilize the soil ever so richly; it will remain barren unless fed by frequent rains."

Is the bell in the tower (is that the right word??) still there? Steve was concerned about that. . .

Watched this tonight, it is short, maybe eight minutes. A must see. It is so spot on with what our experience has been. I did drop Michael a note last night about what is happening from the sale to the Islamic group perspective and would encourage others to do the same. He has been instrumental in bringing the tough issues to light. Just click on the link. There is a contact button at the bottom of the page if you are interested.

Thanks for the update Greg. By the way, what did they put on the doors to cover up the crosses? Are they new doors or just coverings? If you get a chance take a picture and post it. Also, will you be posting all of the other pictures you took on your web-site (after June 4)?

I did take some pictures of the doors. I've attached one of them. It looks like they just screwed some sheet metal into the doors. It looks really classy. I assume they will be painted eventually.

I'll be posting all my photos on my website as soon as I get the time. I also have a lot of good ones from before St. John's close and of the final days. Also Deacon Ron's bell tower photos and lots of history photos.

Thank you for mentioning an excellent source of information about the state of the Catholic Church, St Michael media/Church Militant. I have been a supporter for the last couple of years. I have found them to be very faithful and supportive of the Pope, the Magisterium, and the true teachings of the Catholic Church. They are broadcasting information about what's going on with the Catholic Church via the Internet. They provide stories like St John's Church, I consider them a great resource for up-to-date information that's not available with most any other Catholic information system.
Faithful Catholics need to be informed to help combat the destruction of our faith in this country!

Anything happening with the windows?

It would be nice if they would find a way to cover them,

All Saints took the altar rail down and it will be out of there this week (hopefully it is already gone).

Anyone with an update on how Father is doing?

As far as I could tell nothing has happened with the windows yet. Hopefully they can remove the Christian symbols from center of the large ones with minimal effect on the rest of the windows.

The windows in the sacristies will have to be either completely blocked or removed but appear to still be in place for now.

Good to know the altar rail is really being saved.

Someone probably has newer information on Father than me but when I talked to him last week he said the fall he had wasn't that bad. He was still planning to have his hip replacement surgery on June 18. He will be in the hospital for three days and then spend a week at the Episcopal Home recovering and getting physical therapy.
